本人主要研究方向为珊瑚礁生态系统微生物化学生态和药效物质基础研究，任现职以来主要从以下二个方面开展工作，并取得阶段成果：
1.南海珊瑚礁生态系统微生物代谢产物及其应用研究
构建了南海珊瑚礁微生物库，从中分离鉴定了近600个化合物，其中180多个新化合物。发现各类活性化合物160余个，其中5个化合物显示了显著的抗前列腺癌活性，并采用细胞和动物模型进行了深入药理学研究。与中山大学中山眼科中心的科研人员基于干眼炎症细胞和动物模型开展海洋来源抗炎化合物对干眼症的应用研究。
2.南海珊瑚礁生态系统微生物化学生态功能及其多功能生物菌剂研制
储备了丰富的珊瑚微生物资源，从中筛选发现了一批独特生态功能的菌株，包括抗病原菌41株、杀虫35株、抗污损菌株12株，目前申请专利2件，完成1种抗菌多功能菌剂的研制和1类具备农药开发潜力的抑制热带水果炭疽病化合物的前期研究。
