主要学术成果:1)发现隐藻与原生生物共生新机制:隐藻以完整细胞形式在红色中缢虫体内进行内共生,提出了“红色中缢虫培育隐藻”的共生新模式;发现勇士鳍藻共生着三种不同类型的叶绿体;发现珊瑚体内生活着两种不同生态功能的纤毛虫:一种纤毛虫吞食虫黄藻细胞,并在短时间内能够保持光合作用的功能,即为“临时性内共生”;另一种纤毛虫以滤食虫黄藻细胞碎屑为生。2)阐明珠江口浮游植物群落结构演变的内在机制,明确珠江口浮游植物季节变化与短时间变化及双胞多沟藻赤潮消退的主控因子,构建了台风季节珠江口浮游植物短期变化与双胞多沟藻赤潮消退的模型。3)藻类分类归属的重新界定与订正:建立了1个新属,重新界定1个目与1个属,发现2个新种,重新定名5个种。4)发现幽灵蛸目第二个种——拟幽灵蛸 (Vampyroteuthis pseudoinfernalis Qiu, Liu&Huang, sp. nov.)。5)确定夜光藻藻华期间其至少摄食浮游生物37科,其摄食最主要类群为桡足类的卵与幼体,其次是硅藻、甲藻、 褐藻、聚球藻等;提出近海海区发生长时间夜光藻藻华将降低海区桡足类的丰度,并影响生态系统的物质与能量传递的效率,进而影响海区渔业资源的产出。
